This Week in the Garden: The Surprise Gifts We Never Planned
If there's one thing gardening teaches me, it's that life rarely grows exactly the way we planned.
This week, my garden gave me one of those unexpected smiles. Somewhere along the way, I accidentally planted a zucchini in one of my flower planters. Instead of quietly giving up, it decided it loved its new home. Now it's overflowing the container, reaching in every direction, and producing beautiful zucchini like it owns the place.
It's a funny reminder that sometimes our "mistakes" become some of our favorite stories.
Around the rest of the garden, the herbs continue to thrive. The lavender is filling the air with its calming fragrance, the echinacea is welcoming pollinators, and every morning seems to bring another butterfly or busy bee making the rounds. There is something deeply peaceful about beginning the day with a cup of coffee and simply watching creation at work.
Gardening has become one of my favorite forms of prayer. Not because I'm saying many words, but because I'm paying attention. I notice the tiny seedlings that finally emerge after days of wondering if they ever would. I celebrate the first bloom. I pull weeds that somehow appeared overnight. I learn patience when growth seems slow and gratitude when harvest finally arrives.
The garden reminds me that God is always working beneath the surface, even when I can't immediately see the results.
This week also reminded me that perfection isn't the goal. Gardens are wonderfully messy. Plants grow where we don't expect them. Seeds volunteer from last year. Some flowers flourish while others struggle. Yet somehow, together, they create beauty.
Maybe our lives are a little like that overflowing zucchini planter.
The plans change.
Life gets messy.
Unexpected opportunities appear.
And sometimes, the very thing we never intended becomes one of God's greatest gifts.
So wherever you find yourself this week, take a few minutes to step outside. Listen to the birds. Watch a bee move from flower to flower. Notice something growing.
You might discover that hope is quietly blooming right where you least expected it.
